One of the first things patients want to know when undergoing LASIK is when they can expect to see clearly. The exact amount of time will vary from patient to patient but the following is a general timeline to give you an idea of what to expect after LASIK.
About Blade-free LASIK
Blade-free LASIK is a surgical procedure used to correct vision problems like nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism by changing the shape of the cornea.
Blade-free LASIK at our Harlingen office is a quick procedure, taking as little as 15 minutes for each eye. During the procedure a small flap is made in the cornea, the cornea is reshaped, and the flap is closed without the need for sutures.
Vision is often immediately better after surgery but patients should understand that the final results can take several weeks or months to develop as described below.
Immediately After Surgery
Some patients notice an immediate improvement in vision but it’s normal for vision to be slightly blurry or hazy. Additionally, some patients experience sensitivity to light or may see halos around lights during recovery.
The Next 24 to 48 Hours
During the next 24 to 48 hours vision may still be blurry but some patients will notice an improvement in vision. Although vision may be clearer, the eyes will need more time to heal and may feel sore. It’s important to avoid rubbing and touching the eyes to reduce the risk of complications.
7 Days after Surgery
Within a week of LASIK surgery, most patients will notice their vision is clearer than it was before surgery. However, the eyes are still healing at this point and vision can fluctuate.
Glare, halos around lights, and difficulty with night vision may occur during the initial recovery stage.
The Next 3 to 6 Months
Most patients will notice clearer vision shortly after LASIK surgery but it can take three to six months for vision to fully stabilize and final results to develop.
With that said, the amount of time it takes for vision to become clear after LASIK will depend on personal healing times and the amount of vision correction needed.
Final Results
Once the eyes have fully healed and the final results of LASIK have become apparent, many patients will achieve 20/20 vision or better. Many LASIK patients are able to stop wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses altogether while others can significantly reduce their need for corrective lenses.
